Preparation of children for Holy Communion

The course begins this weekend. We are saddened by the illness that has stricken Jackie Reilly who has led the programme for many years. Please pray for her. Because the number is so great we are still struggling to find the best way to arrange the masses next May. For the moment the stress is on you parents. It is your task to prepare your child. Our organisation, our catechists are there to help you do your task. You have to show by your practice that you are thoroughly committed to this life-long intimate companionship with Jesus that is Holy Communion. If your child does not see in you a serious commitment, then First Communion will go nowhere: could it even be damaging?

Little Sisters of the Poor

Send their grateful thanks for the generous donation of £3061 which will go towards the emergency lighting at St Anne’s Home.

The Movie Night

Another spectacular success! Great fun and great enthusiasm. You worked hard setting it up and next morning evidence you cleared up so well. Nothing left but some popcorn for the birds. It was a great parish event and great for the Telco groups funds for Syrian refugee families. Thank you for both.

Alert all Ushers

The autumn count of attendance at weekend masses has to be taken today and on the next 3 Sundays. Please take special care to record the number present at each of the masses at St Thomas and also at St James Buckhurst Hill and Chigwell Convent.

Sick, housebound living in care homes

Sunday Mass and tea, 30th September at 3 pm I thank you members of the SVP and many more who regularly visit in their homes and care for our housebound members throughout the year. We are making a special effort to bring as many of them as possible to church next Sunday afternoon. The mass will be brief, as it needs to be for you who are suffering. Then tea and chat follows in Becket. The sacrament is for any who labour under any serious ailment or disability. It is one of the ways our church stimulates awareness of how all suffering can be linked with and united with the suffering of Jesus. If you require transport please contact the parish office

Extra collections

This weekend is a rarity: no retiring collection. They have come thick and fast recently and you have excelled yourselves in giving: to the Little Sisters of the Poor, to the Franciscan Missions and most recently to the SVP for relief of the flooding in Kerala. I thank you for your wonderful example of generous giving.

St Thomas Badminton Club

Deacon Alan Mair

Our congratulations to Alan who was ordained Deacon here yesterday in a most impressive ceremony. Being a religious parish we are fortunate in having several priests as well as Deacon Matthew for the liturgical and ministerial services of our parish. So Alan’s ministry will lie elsewhere, in surrounding parishes and other roles where his talents will be much in demand. Ad multos annos Alan

Fr Boniface

70 years ago this week, after a year’s noviciate a young Hans Krueger began his Franciscan life as frater Boniface. He celebrates his platinum jubilee of this profession on Wednesday, when he will lead the 10 am Mass. We thank and congratulate him on a Franciscan life spent in teaching and initial formation of friars, school and parish work and long service in the General OFM Curia in Rome.

First Holy Communion

There is a meeting this Wednesday evening for parents of all the children who will receive their first communion next May. It is very important that every family is represented so that you will know exactly what is required of you to help your children be ready for their great day next May.

Items left in the church porch

Please do not leave any items for jumble in the church. As it blocks fire exit and increases our insurance. The date of the next jumble sale will be announced later. Any items left before then will be thrown away.
