Admire the view

So we find ourselves - a large representative number of St Thomas’ parish - enjoying the environment God has given us. The secular world is being wakened – our children taking the lead – to the importance of taking good care of it. If you go to Israel you will find that a mass celebrated on the shores of the sea of Galilee is the closest you come to the Jesus of Nazareth. Away from the bustle, from the strident conflicts of Jerusalem and Judea you enjoy the calm scenery and wildlife. Today we meet Jesus in the midst of his natural world. The encounter with him continues in the picnic and the party, in the same setting.

A Phoenix?

And if you turn your eyes to the building you can see the Blessed Sacrament Chapel roof fresh-clad in new underwear, awaiting its final canopy. An aspect of the friary is already decked with new tiles that should keep out wind and storm for more generations than we shall count. There is prospect that the whole re-roofing project will be completed well within the forecasted time-span. Further intimations suggest our present balance in the Building Fund will cover the parish portion of the expense. So please enjoy the day. And feel that this is the way forward to being a vibrant part of the new shape the church is to take in the Diocese of Brentwood in the coming years. Paul wrote To the Churc

Increasingly we see unsupervised children playing with the votive candles in church. It means we will have to do away with them. Recently several have spoken to me with alarm, which I share.

As you see the work has begun. Is there symbolism in the fact that they started with the confessionals? I don’t know. But you can see the fresh clay tiles keeping us dry. Soon we will have to think about paying the piper. We have enough in the bank to pay the parish share of the roof. But bigger costs loom when we come to the heating. Fund-raising nowadays is a highly developed business. I am trying to find someone to advise us. Is there anyone among us who can give some guidance as to how to go about it?

The Year of Luke

Lecture this Wednesday Fr Adrian Graffy gave a gentle but most informative talk with much information opening up Luke’s Gospel. Do come for the second half of his talk. It provides a great help to prayer. Also to understanding how the gospels came about. Then and now they are the base of our life in all aspects. Wednesday 7.30pm in the Becket Centre.

It’s World Fair Trade Day

It seems like there’s a ‘world day’ for everything now, from Roast Leg of Lamb Day (last Tuesday) to Lost Sock Memorial Day (next Thursday). But today’s a bit different. It’s World Fair Trade Day. It’s different because on World Fair Trade Day, you have a real chance to join farmers living thousands of miles away who, like you, want a fairer future. Cocoa farmers in Côte d'Ivoire are fighting for their right to earn a living income - sign here to ask our Prime Minister to join them. SIGN THE PETITION TO BACK COCOA FARMERS By buying Fairtrade chocolate, you've already supported transformational projects in Côte d'Ivoire, like building life-saving medical clinics and bringing electricity to co

Migrants Mass

As usual our parish was represented by our Telco members at this annual mass this time in Westminster Cathedral, reassuring migrants of our welcome. Two or three years ago Pope Francis asked “that every parish, every religious community, every sanctuary of Europe will take in one family”. His words provided the theme for last Monday’s mass. Catholic parishes up and down the country are engaging in Community Sponsorship, taking responsibility for supporting an immigrant family for its first two years. Our Telco group has been quietly working for this and there are hopes that a family will soon arrive housed within the parish with our support.
