USHERS/STEWARDS at 10am Sunday Mass

We are looking for families to help out at 10am mass. The commitment is once every 6 weeks welcoming people, handing out service sheets, conducting the Offertory collection, etc. A really good way of meeting new people and getting the children involved in the mass. Guidance given. Please contact David Underwood at

In holiday time things become more relaxed. So it is good to remind ourselves of the vigilance everybody needs to maintain. Nolan: “It is principally in the parish… that awareness needs to be at its highest”. So a reminder  In regard to children there are 4 main kinds of abuse about which we must be alert: to Sexual, Physical, Emotional and Neglect.  In regard to adults who may be vulnerable there are 6 potential forms of abuse: Physical, Domestic violence, Sexual, Psychological, Financial, Modern slavery, Organisational, Neglect, Self-neglect. Not a pretty menu for your meditation I regret, but there is a need for us all to be alert to what may be happening in our modern world. A reminder

Parish AGM

About 50 came last Sunday to show their interest in our parish. It was a good meeting. First it affirmed a great deal of achievement of the past year. Next: it showed that now you are taking over the “running” of the parish. The priests’ job is to preach and pray. The rest is yours. Much has been done by the pro-active Parish Council, but supported by many personal initiatives and much steady application covering wide areas of practical and pastoral concerns. Looking to the future there was enthusiasm for the tasks ahead. They are varied in kind and at various stages of planning and execution. Replacement of the roofs is nearing completion; there is a time-scale for replacing the heating. Th

Schools finally have finished. I hope everyone will now have a rest and a true holiday. The newsletter – by common request! – will continue to appear each weekend. But planning for a new start in September has already begun. I think we will repeat information and notices through the summer weeks so that you do not miss anything. Registration for Communion preparation is urgent. Plans are afoot to make our annual 24 hours of Prayer more comprehensive than before when it happens on 11th-12th October. But for now – have a good rest in peace and tranquility. You deserve it.

Monday teas after 10am Mass

We have piloted two successful Monday teas after 10am Mass with parishioners and Friars enjoying the atmosphere and a relaxing catch up. We will look to start this in September on the first Monday of each month and see how it develops. We would like to take this forward on a more regular basis from September onwards and are looking for volunteers to join in on a rota basis. Please contact the Parish Office if you are interested in assisting.

Pat Bell RIP

Safety for all

You have read or heard of the dire report from IICSA on the record of Birmingham Archdiocese and not exonerating Cardinal Nichols' performance. We think we have done all possible, but still the warning comes out: Not enough. Our parish provision is good. I thank Claire Nairne and Emma Smith for their vigilance and much work in providing DBS clearances. Claire is now moving to headship of a school in Higham’s Park and so we are looking for someone to take over her task. Any offers?

Fire alarm practice

Two Sundays past the congregation at 11.30am met an unexpected conclusion to the mass. Invited to remain in their seats, all were given explicit instructions on how they should empty the church in case of an emergency. The alarm bells should have then sounded, but did not. Nonetheless, all obeyed the verbal order to depart in silence, rapidly without taking possessions especially cumbersome buggies. They acted splendidly, vacating the church and assembling at the appointed post within 90 seconds. Do notice please how well the Parish Council is looking after you. Immense work has been done, at some expense to ensure we are compliant with all health and safety regulations.

Parish Fete

God gave us the weather. He also gave us Áine and Patricia. The organisation they have been building for months provided a day of great entertainment. It was a glimpse of a happy family of families relaxing together. That is what a parish should be. I thank everyone who contributed to the success of the Fete. Thank you for coming. Evidently there were many counter-attractions that day. You were greatly generous in providing the stalls and needs. We discovered much hidden talent in the young people – the product of a good parish.
