Franciscan Missionary Union

Last year a friar from South Africa visited us and made an appeal on behalf of South Africa Missions. Unfortunately, nobody has come this year. However we are having the usual appeal through this newsletter in the hope that you will still be willing to support the missions as you have done in the past. As you leave the Mass today will you please take a mission envelope and bring it back next week with your offering. Thank you for your support.

“Pray continuously and never lose heart”

For three Sundays in the row, the Gospel reading has featured our prayer: a prayer of thanks, of petition, of humility. You made a beautiful display with your labels on the screen and the children’s two displays from our 24-hour prayer. Thank you. Please keep it up for prayer is the principal and most essential task of our parish.

Friends’ of St Thomas Parish

Such as now the title of our restoration fund. You have responded promptly and magnificently. 38 have already expressed a wish to discuss setting up a banker order with gift aid. This week the committee members will be meeting these personally. Meantime the families with children preparing Holy Communion are considering activities to help them reach the stiff target they have set themselves.

November Dead List

Mass will be offered daily during the month of November for your loved ones. Envelopes are available from the back of the church. Please return either through the Friary letterbox (no need to ring the bell) or the parish office.

One or two concerned parents have been asking what observance of this so-named day is appropriate. The world of course means Vigil of the feast of All Saints. So the best observance would be joining the vigil mass at 7.30pm on Thursday. Not the most popular suggestion with children, no doubt. Masses on Friday, Feast of All Saints 10am at Chigwell and St Thomas, and 8pm at St Thomas.

St John Henry Newman

Even the secular press gave space last weekend to the canonization of our fellow countryman. The Times even suggested him to have been the greatest Victorian. He has been a considerable influence in shaping our current understanding of our faith and its practice. Most noteworthy his insistence on the rightful place of the laity in our church, and the development of doctrine. Do we need to talk more about these?

24 Hours with the Lord

Many came. Many stayed long. Thank you. The boost to prayer in our parish is evident in the three display boards on the sanctuary. The larger board bears many ticket-like hand-written petitions and prayers you have added from Friday evening till Saturday’s vigil mass. I do thank the organisers who provided encouragement and support in imaginative ways. Well done everybody. Please now continue the prayer.

Launch of Restoration Fund

You responded magnificently to the request to come last Monday to learn of our Restoration plans. Nearly 60 welcomed Andrew’s programme for raising the money. That you for coming. Thanks to Andrew and your readiness—it does not look such a formidable task. We will be doing our best to contact you busy people to let you all know what to expect in the works to come, and also how you can help. Please let us know if you are interested. We need you all. There are leaflets at the back of Church with some more information.

Children not in catholic schools

As our young people have come to start learning about Holy Communion we asked how many have the benefit of a catholic school. Almost half do not. So the pressure on you parents is huge. How do you teach and pass on your faith to your children without the benefit of a school where our faith and practice is part of the furniture, the walls and the whole ethos of each day from start to finish? Each Saturday there is teaching for your children here for two hours. The teachers come, but mostly a single child. Please use this valuable help the parish provides for you.
