First a look outwards because things have happened this week. We are a Telco parish. We have been much involved in this UK Citizens movement to remedy evils that people on our doorstep are suffering. Last week the newsletter reported significant progress in getting the living wage for carers. What the leaders in the parish were too modest to say was that they have worked for years, canvassing, attending meetings, pushing employers Whitehall included, chivvying them to pay the minimum wage that Law now demands. Many are still not doing it. Last week our bishops turned out in force to sign up to this campaign to get the living wage really paid to all carers. The prompt came from here. Well done.

Affordable housing

Progress on this too. Property developers buy up land. They often hold it, only building when the market is most favourable. Their interest is maximum profit. Years ago 60 of our parish paid £1 each to belong to the Community Land Trust. This is an organisation that fights developers to include a proportion of affordable houses or flats in every building project. So we have clout in the tortuous planning meetings. Again it was the Telco members – you - who have pressured a large development in the borough to include a number of truly affordable houses in the Loxley Lane development. It is a relentless battle to meet the needs of families for a roof, fighting against the builders seeking maximum profit. Telco needs you!

And of course they are weekly taking care of the large Syrian family they have brought to Woodford. I thank all you members of St Thomas Telco group. You give us respectability in this area of catholic concern.
