Mere Spectators?

A tendency has crept up in our church – it is the same throughout society secular and religious – to be mere spectators. In sport, art, music we go to see hear experts doing it, rather than generating it by our personal efforts.

So there are Spectator Catholics. People who quite like the church, even come to mass quite regularly, but it stops there. They play no active part in it. No participation. Some fear that streaming will reinforce this tendency. To sit comfortably at home to watch mass. That is death. Spiritual sclerosis. God was never a mere spectator. He came at Christmas into the messy business of actually being human. Nothing less was good enough for him. Nor can it be for us.
