The church of the first centuries
The Apostles were not priests. Their job was to preach and pray. When administration problems began to sour the idyllic life of the first community of Jesus’ followers they promptly invented a new service group. It was the Deacons. And so it went on developing. Paul lists some of the offices that together made up the church: “some were prophets (people who tell about God), some evangelists, some pastors, some teachers..” and so on. No mention of priests. They came later, bundling together a lot of jobs that should be shared out among many. Find them on the board. When shared out each can be done effectively. That is what we need to reconstruct. Will you do it? Do you care enough to make the inevitable sacrifices?
